Why Your AC Runs Constantly But Your House Stays Warm

If your air conditioner is running all day and night but your house never actually gets cold, something is broken. This is one of the most common calls we get at Air Tech of Conroe, and the good news is it's usually fixable. The bad news is that ignoring it costs you real money every month on your electric bill, and the problem almost always gets worse. Let's walk through what's actually happening and what you can do about it.

The Thermostat Might Be Lying to You

Start here because it's the cheapest fix. Your thermostat tells your AC unit when to turn on and off. If it's not reading the temperature correctly, your system will run constantly trying to hit a target it can never reach. Thermostats get dirty. Dust builds up inside them. Sometimes they get placed in a bad spot, like directly in sunlight from a window or right next to a lamp, and they read false high temperatures. Try moving it away from heat sources and cleaning the vents gently with a soft brush. If it's over 15 years old, it might just be time to replace it. A new programmable thermostat from a hardware store is not expensive, and it might solve your problem completely.

Your Refrigerant is Low

This is the most common reason we find when it's not the thermostat. Your AC system uses refrigerant to absorb heat from inside your house and move it outside. If you're low on refrigerant, the system has to work much harder and run much longer to cool the air. It might run all day and barely get your house to 78 or 79 degrees. Low refrigerant usually means there's a leak somewhere in the line. You cannot just add refrigerant and call it fixed. We have to find the leak, seal it, and then recharge the system properly. This is not a DIY job. Refrigerant handling requires certification and special equipment. Call us or another licensed HVAC company to check it out.

The Air Filter is Choking Your System

This one sounds simple, but it makes a real difference. Your AC pulls air through a filter before it cools it. If that filter is clogged with dust and pet hair, the system has to work twice as hard to pull air through. Your compressor runs constantly, and very little cooled air actually makes it into your house. Check your filter right now. If you cannot see light through it when you hold it up, it needs changing. Most people should change their filter every month during cooling season in Conroe, especially if you have pets or anyone with allergies. A clogged filter also strains your compressor and can lead to more expensive repairs down the road.

Your Ductwork Might Have Holes

If your ducts are leaking, cooled air is escaping into your attic or walls instead of into your living spaces. Your system runs and runs, but the cool air never reaches where you need it. This is especially common in older homes around Conroe where ducts have settled or been damaged. You might notice that some rooms cool fine but others stay warm. That's a sign of ductwork problems. A professional can use smoke testing or thermal imaging to find leaks. Small holes can be sealed with mastic sealant. Larger problems might require duct replacement in certain sections. This is worth fixing because leaky ducts waste about 20 to 30 percent of your cooling energy.

Your Compressor is Wearing Out

The compressor is the heart of your AC system. It pumps refrigerant through the whole circuit. If it's failing, it cannot maintain proper pressure, and the system runs constantly without cooling effectively. A compressor that is going bad often makes grinding or clicking sounds when it runs. You might also notice the outdoor unit is very hot to the touch or that frost is building up on the refrigerant lines. If your system is over 10 years old and has been running constantly, compressor failure is likely. A new compressor is expensive, usually between 1,200 and 2,000 dollars. If your system is over 15 years old, you might want to consider replacing the whole unit instead of just the compressor. A new efficient system will cool better and cost less to run every month.

What to Do Right Now

Start with the easy checks. Look at your thermostat placement and your air filter. If those are fine, call Air Tech of Conroe and describe what you are seeing. Tell us if some rooms cool and others do not, or if the system is running but the air coming out is not cold. We can do a quick diagnostic to figure out if it is refrigerant, ductwork, or something else. The sooner you get it checked, the sooner you stop throwing money away on a system that is not working right.
