When to Call for Emergency HVAC Service and When It Can Wait

Not every HVAC problem means you need someone out right now. Some things genuinely need emergency attention, and some things can be handled during regular business hours without any real risk to your home or wallet. The trick is knowing the difference, because calling out a technician at midnight for something that could wait until Tuesday morning costs you money you don't need to spend. At the same time, ignoring a real emergency can turn a simple fix into a catastrophic one. Here's how to figure out which situation you're actually in.

Complete Loss of Heat in Winter

If your furnace stops working entirely during cold weather and you have no heat, that's an emergency. In Conroe, we don't get the brutal cold snaps that northern states do, but we still drop into the 30s and 40s regularly from December through February. Without heat, your pipes can freeze and burst within hours, and that's a repair that costs thousands. If your system goes down on a Friday night or over a weekend, call for emergency service. Don't wait.

The one exception is if you have a space heater or can stay with family. But if you're going to be in the house and it's cold outside, get a technician out there.

No Air Conditioning During a Heat Wave

A broken AC system in the middle of summer is serious, but it depends on the situation. If it's 95 degrees outside and your system is completely dead, you need service soon, but not necessarily in the middle of the night if it just died at 11 p.m. Call first thing in the morning and explain the situation. Most HVAC companies in Conroe, including Air Tech, will get you on the schedule quickly during summer.

However, if you have elderly family members, young children, or anyone with a health condition that makes heat dangerous, treat it as an emergency. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real threats. Make the emergency call.

Refrigerant Leaks and Strange Noises

If your AC is running but it's not cooling well, and you notice it's been getting gradually worse over a few weeks, that's not an emergency. You probably have a refrigerant leak. It needs to be fixed, but it's not urgent enough for a 2 a.m. service call. Schedule it during business hours.

But if you hear a grinding, squealing, or banging noise coming from your outdoor unit or inside your house, stop running the system and call for service. Those sounds usually mean mechanical failure, and running the system can cause more damage. That one should be handled the same day if possible.

Thermostat and Electrical Issues

If your thermostat isn't responding, first check whether it has batteries and replace them if it does. If that doesn't fix it, you might have a wiring issue or a faulty thermostat. This is annoying, but it's not an emergency unless your system is running constantly without stopping. If the system is cycling normally, it can wait until the next business day. If it's running non-stop, call for emergency service because something is seriously wrong with the control system.

Carbon Monoxide Concerns

This is the one where you don't hesitate. If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, get everyone out of the house immediately and call 911 first, then call your HVAC company. A faulty furnace can leak carbon monoxide, and that's a life-threatening emergency. Don't try to troubleshoot this yourself. The detector is telling you something is wrong, and you need professional help right now.

When You Can Definitely Wait

Filter changes, minor performance issues that started recently, strange smells that aren't chemical or burning, and slightly uneven cooling between rooms are all things that can be scheduled for next week. Furnaces and AC units that are running but just not performing as well as they used to can usually wait a few days. If your system is 15 years old and seems tired, get it looked at, but make an appointment during business hours.

Also, if you hear a noise but the system is still heating or cooling normally, it's worth getting checked, but it doesn't need to be a middle-of-the-night call. Call in the morning.

How to Decide

Ask yourself three questions. First, is anyone in immediate danger from heat or cold? Second, is the system making a noise that suggests mechanical failure? Third, could this turn into a much bigger problem if I wait until morning? If you answer yes to any of those, call for emergency service. If the answer to all three is no, schedule it during regular hours and save the emergency fee.
